‘That's Not Luck:' Group Steals Whole ATMS, $60K Cash From 42 NYC Businesses in 6 Months

‘That's Not Luck:' Group Steals Whole ATMS, $60K Cash From 42 NYC Businesses in 6 Months

Police are searching for a group of five burglars who have stolen ATMs from at least 42 businesses across Brooklyn and Queens over the last six months -- an apparently sophisticated team that is taking not just cash but entire machines in the heists.

Each of the thefts, which started in December, have occurred in the evening or overnight, while the businesses — ranging from donut shops to laundromats — have been closed.

Video provided by the NYPD from a previous burglary on Fulton Street shows one of the thieves pulling the ATM from the wall, then rolling it to an aisle with a broken window. The man and an accomplice on the outside can be seen on video seemingly trying to figure out how to get the cash machine out of the store.

Video from the East New York Deli on Elton Street from early June showed two burglars using a tool to break the lock on a metal gate, while a third person stands watch. When they are done, they raise the gate and smash open a window to climb inside the shop.

One store clerk believes that the suspects must have scoped out his store beforehand.

"The crazy thing, they definitely been here cause they only broke the particular spot where the ATM was. They didn’t break nowhere else, just that," he said. "Unfortunately they seem to know what they’re doing, because 42? That’s not luck anymore."

Police said they are investigating, but have not yet drawn a connection to ATM thefts previously spotlighted by NBC New York in April. Those crooks also hit businesses in Brooklyn and Queens, wheeling entire machines from stores.

The sheer number of ATMs taken in the latest theft pattern — as well as the $60,000 stolen — has local businesses urging police to catch the group quickly.

No arrests have yet been made. An investigation is ongoing.

Sledgehammer Swinging Crew Hits NY Jewelry Store After Owner Goes for Coffee

Sledgehammer Swinging Crew Hits NY Jewelry Store After Owner Goes for Coffee

A brazen smash and grab robbery in the middle of the day earned a fast-moving crew at least $100,000 in stolen jewelry.

Wild surveillance video shows four men in masks and hoodies taking sledgehammers and a crow bar to the front window of Golden Square Jewelry off Broadway in downtown Yonkers.

The owner of the small business says the masked suspects waited, plotting the right time to optimal time to strike. He said the thieves waited outside his store until he went next door for a cup of coffee.

In the span of 90 seconds, the four-man team was able to grab high-valued chains and other jewelry from the front of the store before taking off in a dark SUV. At one point in the video, the manager of the store is seen on the other side of the glass trying to fight off the suspects.

Police caught up to the suspects and briefing pursue them until the SUV crashed into a house on Marshall Road. The men tried running, but three were eventually taken into custody.

Investigators have identified the fourth suspect and believe an additional arrest will be made soon.

Police said it's too early to tell if this crew could be connected to other recent jewelry store smash and grabs in the Bronx.

NYPD: Burglary Suspect Breaks Into 7 Queens Homes, Steals Nearly $122,000 In Property

NYPD: Burglary Suspect Breaks Into 7 Queens Homes, Steals Nearly $122,000 In Property

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police are linking a string of burglaries in Queens to a man they say has gotten away with more than $120,000 worth of stolen property.

As CBS2’s Aundrea Cline-Thomas reported Monday, they need help tracking down the suspect.

According to the NYPD , home surveillance video caught a thief rummaging through a homeowner’s belongings when they were away. Police said it was one of at least seven homes targeted in the East Flushing neighborhood.

“Everything is on the floor… All the drawers, they emptied all the drawers,” said Jack Chien.

Chien installed a new security system after his home was burglarized during the day on Jan. 26.

Not far away, on a quiet block of 170th Place and Lithonia Avenue, residents were taking a good look at the suspect’s picture.

“They said my neighbor got robbed during the day, they don’t know what time it was,” Jerry Ballesty said. “He came home at night, his place was ransacked, and I live right next door so it’s kind of scary.”

That’s where police say the burglary spree started.

“They were celebrating his daughter’s birthday that night. So, we have to constantly be vigilant,” said Ruben Tejada.

The suspect may not have acted alone. Police said three men broke into a home near Laburnum Avenue and 59th Street and stole $22,000 worth of property.

In all, more than $120,000 in electronics, jewelry and personal items were stolen between Jan. 18 and Feb. 16.

“It’s got you to a point where you’re afraid. I have an alarm system. I’m always locking myself in my home. It isn’t a great way to live,” another resident said.

“We have cameras up now and we watch everything. We put lights on at night,” Ballesty said. “You just have to look out your door and watch things to see what’s going on.”

Residents are frustrated with the burglaries and the overall rise in crime across New York City .

“It’s all around. New York is really disappointing me,” another resident said.

No one was home during any of the Flushing burglaries. One resident believes the suspect watched him leave his house before breaking in.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) , or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) . You can also submit a tip via their website or via DM on Twitter, @NYPDTips . All calls are kept confidential.

Grandfather beaten and robbed while riding Citi Bike in East New York

Grandfather beaten and robbed while riding Citi Bike in East New York

EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Police are searching for the man who viciously beat and robbed a grandfather riding a Citi Bike in Brooklyn.

It happened on Saturday, July 24 at 9:05 a.m. near Pitkin Avenue and Barbey Street in East New York.

The 68-year-old man was riding his bike when the attacker approached him. He started to touch the victim's pockets and demand his belongings.

The victim tried to fight back until the suspect began to punch and kick him repeatedly in the head and body.

After he was beaten too badly to fight back, the robber then pilfered through the victim's pockets taking his phone and silver necklace.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and was treated for a broken wrist, broken nose, and cuts and scrapes throughout his body. He's currently listed in stable condition.

Now the victim's daughter is making a desperate plea for the public's help.

"I ask anybody if you know something please say something," she said. "Picking on the elderly...once you knocked him down, that was enough, did you have to continue doing it, continue kicking him?"

Jose Gonzalez's surveillance video captured the attack.

"I was in the back making sandwiches, the lady said get your gun, but I don't have no gun," Gonzalez said. "When I went outside, he was on the floor with blood."

Gonzalez said he tended to the victim after the suspect got away on Pitkin Avenue.

"I just took him and put alcohol on his face , we cleaned everything and the police came right away," he said.

The victim, who is known in the neighborhood, is recovering with family and said to be a quiet and humble guy.

His family has a message for the suspect:

"We will find you...we will catch you."
