Police: Burglars Smashing Into Pharmacies In Brooklyn And Queens, Stealing Cash, Prescription Pills

Police: Burglars Smashing Into Pharmacies In Brooklyn And Queens, Stealing Cash, Prescription Pills

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — At least five mom-and-pop pharmacies have been broken into across the city.

Police say tens of thousands of dollars worth of drugs have been stolen. As CBS2’s Kevin Rincon reported Friday, it’s not the work of a lone burglar.

The front window is being replaced at the Strand Pharmacy in Astoria, Queens after police say at least two men broke in and stole an estimated $10,000 worth of prescription pills, along with $2,000 in cash.

It happened on April 13.

Not far way, police say four men used a crow bar to smash through a front window at Health Quest RX Pharmacy, but left empty handed.

“They were looking specifically for controlled medication, nothing else,” said a pharmacy employee. “They didn’t take no money or anything. They just wanted narcotics or controlled substances.”

The employee and her boss said just the attempt to steal from them is heartbreaking.

“It’s terrible because we’re trying to pick up the time we lost because of COVID. So, it’s a selfish thing that they did,” Ashley, the employee, said.

“It’s a little absurd. I think that it’s shocking and we were the ones, as health care professionals, to help the community, and if we’re the ones being target now, it’s a big deal,” her boss, Regina, said.

They’re not alone.

Police said three men used rocks to break through glass at the Organic Pharmacy in Astoria. They allegedly stole $27,000 worth of pills before fleeing.

On April 12, cops said three men broke into the Corner Pharmacy in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s now been robbed twice, after a group of men smashed through the front window back on March 26.

In both cases, the suspects got away with pills.

“It’s sad. It’s sad what the world is come to because it’s a very nice place out here. It’s family oriented,” one person said.

It wasn’t just pharmacies that were targeted. Police say a group of men tried to rob an ATM inside a check cashing store, too.

“It’s scary, because we’re in Park Slope, Brooklyn. It’s supposed to be one of the safest neighborhoods,” said Margarito Rosario, who works at a dentist’s office nearby.

“I bring my daughter to work with me every morning. So I was kind of scared, and then she gets nervous when she sees cops,” said Michele Vila.

They see what’s happening as indicative of something else.

“This is desperate. People are desperate, the need help,” said Rosario. “This is a cry for help. This is not because people want to be criminals.”

Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.

Serial bank robber allegedly threatened to ‘kill everyone’ in Queens branch

Serial bank robber allegedly threatened to ‘kill everyone’ in Queens branch

An alleged serial bank robber who was arrested earlier this week was slapped with federal charges for two of the heists — including one job where he threatened to kill everyone at a Chase branch in Queens, according to court documents unsealed Friday.

Craig Gernett, 42, was charged with bank robbery in Brooklyn federal court for that theft and another caper at a Queens Citibank earlier this month, according to the criminal complaint against him.

Prosecutors allege Gernett walked into the Court Square Citibank in Long Island City at about 12 p.m. on May 6 and handed a teller a robbery note, the complaint states.

“No die (sic) packs. No GPS. No bait money, make it fast put all the money you have in the drawer in envelopes this is not a joke. I have 2 people outside. I have a gun,” the note read.

The note Craig Gernett allegedly wrote before sticking up the bank.

The teller forked over $1,115 and Gernett allegedly walked away with the cash, prosecutors allege.

On May 11, Gernett allegedly struck again, hitting a Chase bank on nearby Queens Plaza South, the complaint states.

He handed a teller a robbery note, who responded by asking “what is that,” according to prosecutors.

In the robbery, Craig Gernett came away with $1,115.

“Are you kidding me, this is a robbery!” Gernett responded.

“I will kill everyone in here, pull from the second drawer,” he said.

The Post previously reported Gernett was cut loose from prison in August after serving 10 years for robbing four banks and 11 shops dating back to 2006.

Police believe he went on a robbery spree this month, which included the two Queens robberies, as well as two other bank jobs last week in Manhattan.

Court documents
Prior to his sentencing in 2006, his lawyer at the time said he was a drug addict who was committing robberies to fund his addiction.

“Put simply, Mr. Gernett committed these robberies while on a crack binge … But underlying Mr. Gernett’s substance abuse problem — and, I submit, a cause of his addiction — is a serious mental illness,” his attorney wrote in court papers at the time.

Disturbing video captures teens attacking, robbing 80-year-old Asian man

Disturbing video captures teens attacking, robbing 80-year-old Asian man

Distressing video captured an 80-year-old Asian man being assaulted and robbed in California — amid a disturbing spike in bias crimes against members of the Asian American community across the US.

The footage from San Leandro on Saturday shows two teens whom police described as as young as 16 attacking the senior, who is knocked to the ground while yelling for help, KGO-TV reported.

Meanwhile, someone who is presumed to be in a getaway car is heard giggling during the brazen attack.

“It’s crazy to see kids that age doing that kind of stuff going down that road already,” the man who recorded the video from his home told the news outlet, identifying himself only as Marcos.

The victim suffered minor injuries while being robbed of a watch, KGO reported.

Police Lt. Ali Kahn said he believes the crime was hate-motivated.

Less than two hours later, a similar vehicle was seen in a strong-arm robbery in which a woman was robbed of her purse.

Kahn said police were shocked when the chief received the results of a victim demographic study.

“From 2019 to 2020, we saw an almost 300 percent increase in crimes towards our Asian and Pacific Islander community members,” he told the station.

Kahn recalled a series of carjackings and burglaries committed by juveniles several weeks ago.

“Other than putting juveniles in jail, what other avenues can we have to maybe divert some of the things that are happening?” he said.

The man who captured the latest attack called for “more consequences because it seems to be ongoing.”

Another video published by KGO last week showed the random stabbing of two elderly Asian women in San Francisco — including one who was attacked so brutally that the blade broke off in her body.

Caught On Video: Suspect In 18 Commercial Burglaries Across Manhattan

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – That’s one busy burglar.

Police are looking for a man taking advantage of closed bars and restaurants. They say he’s robbed nearly 20 of them, and it’s not just money he’s taking.

Police say the man has helped himself to whatever he can get his hands on in bars and restaurants forced to close either partially or entirely pandemic.

Video from April 21 at Marlow Bistro on Amsterdam Avenue shows him breaking in around 10 p.m. He made off with $500 and two Apple iPads.

Police say he cuts through the vinyl door entrances and damages glass front doors to gain entry.

The suspect has allegedly broken into at least 18 place and has stolen about $30,000 in cash, alcohol and electronics.

His pattern stretches all over: The Lower East Side, Midtown, Upper West Side, Harlem.

Blue seafood bar was broken into on Ninth Avenue. Kasia Banas owns Route 66, which is next door.

“We are struggling. This is…i f you break the window and you steal a couple bottles of liquor, it’s not the liquor you are stealing. It’s the expense we have to go through to fix those windows and we can’t afford it,” Banas said.

Her restaurant was broken into weeks ago, and $200 was stolen, but it was not one of the places listed in this pattern.

Debbie Kavourias owns the hardware store on the other side of Blue, which has been there for decades. She’s never heard of this many break-ins before.

“Not like this. Never like this. And I’m surprised, because there’s cameras,” she said. “We’re struggling. Everybody here is struggling, and when things like this happen, it’s very scary.

The NYPD says while overall crime is down, burglary is up from this time last year by nearly 26%.

The last incident for this pattern took place Monday.

SEE IT: Armed robbers tie up five people, steal $40,000 in harrowing Queens home invasion

New York (NY Daily News)

Three masked gunmen stormed a Queens backyard where they tied up five people and swiped $40,000 in a daring caught-on-camera heist, officials said. The crooks entered the backyard of the home near 146th St. and 116th Ave. in South Jamaica through an open side entrance around 5:15 p.m. Friday, and found five people relaxing on the deck by a heat lamp. Surveillance video released Saturday by police shows the gunmen binding their victims’ wrists and ankles with zip ties. They grabbed a 43-year-old man and brought him into the house where they pistol-whipped him, cops said. “Where’s the money?” one of the gunmen demanded as the suspects rifled through the belongings, police said. The crooks ran off with $40,000 and were last seen heading north on 146th St. The pistol-whipped man suffered a cut on his face, but refused medical attention. No other injuries were reported. Police described the thieves as dark-skinned men dressed in dark clothing, wearing either face masks or surgical masks. Two of the men had thin builds. The third had a heavy build, said cops. One of the three suspects was carrying a duffel bag, officials said.

Thieves Swipe $160K In Goods From SoHo Chanel Store During Wild, Daytime Robbery

New York(NBC New York)- Armed thieves were seen on video pilfering a Chanel store in SoHo in broad daylight, raiding the shop and making off with about $160,000 in luxury items as stunned shoppers looked on.

The four men busted into the store at the corner of Spring Street and Wooster Street in Manhattan just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Video recorded by a woman inside the store shows them moving about the store, grabbing designer bags and goods by the armful while two others hold the doors open.

At one point, a security guard inside told one of the robbers that she was armed. The man responded, "What are you going to do? Shoot me?" and showed her the butt of his own gun.

Police confirmed that the suspects are responsible for a pattern of robberies — 20 in total, including a COS store next door — taking place from SoHo to midtown over the past couple of months. NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said the robbery spree began during the widespread looting that took place over the summer.

"They go in, snatching things off of shelves, and speed off," Harrison said in a call with reporters Thursday. He said that the suspects sell the stolen goods on social media.

Police have struggled to apprehend the suspects due to difficulties that have arisen as a result of COVID — for example, wearing face masks has made it hard to identify suspects.

In Tuesday's incident, the robbers also took off in an Audi sedan with no license plates, making it difficult to see where it might have gone after the heist. Detectives said that the getaway cars the suspects have frequently used are rental cares, often with fake license plates.

The complaint filed with police said the suspects took about $160,000 worth of goods. An investigation is ongoing.

81-Year-Old ‘Holiday Bandit' Gets 5 Years in Prison for Manhattan Apartment Break-ins

81-Year-Old ‘Holiday Bandit' Gets 5 Years in Prison for Manhattan Apartment Break-ins

An 81-year-old Florida man known as the "Holiday Bandit" has been sentenced to five years in prison for breaking into luxury Manhattan homes during the holidays.

Authorities say Samuel Sabatino was behind numerous burglaries of doorman buildings on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side during Fourth of July, Memorial Day and other holidays for about a decade. He was caught on surveillance cameras at least once, stealing cash and jewels.

He pleaded guilty on Jan. 2 to attempted burglary, bail jumping, burglary, and tampering with evidence, the New York Daily News reported.

Sabatino would sneak past doormen and ride up elevators, pick apartment locks and then make his getaway. Police sources said Sabatino would drive up to the city from his home in Miami and pay cash tolls along his route, perhaps to avoid detection. They said he would then stay in a motel in New Jersey and cross the George Washington Bridge — again, paying cash —before picking a building to target.

An alert doorman at a building along 93rd Street noticed him as he tried to enter a few months ago and turned him away. The doorman then called police.

Police said they can link Sabatino to at least five burglaries in recent years, but they suspect he is behind many others. Statute of limitations is five years for larceny.

One victim from a July 4, 2015, burglary said at the time that she was shaken her apartment had been targeted.

"You start to shake. You start to feel like you have been violated," the woman said, asking her name not be disclosed.

She said she had more than $40,000 in jewelry stolen.

In another alleged instance, according to a criminal complaint, a man reported that $50,000 of valuables, including wedding rings, a diamond ring and high-end watches were missing from his apartment when he and his wife returned to their home on 79th Street after days away.

In 2019 alone, Sabatino stole over $100,000, successfully entering three separate apartments and attempting to enter additional apartments, according to Assistant District Attorney Rachel Polisner. However, it is believed Sabatino has stolen about $400,000 worth of items over the past five years.

Additionally, Polisner said that in an effort to destroy evidence, Sabatino tried to flush a watch down the toilet, which prosecutors believe belongs to an alleged burglary victim.

Polisner said that part of the reason why the investigation has been ongoing for years is largely because Sabatino was living under a new identity, the alias "James Clement," since he disappeared in 2001 after allegedly jumping bail from a previous burglary arrest.

NYPD: Suspects Steal $700K In Goods In More Than 40 Burglaries

NYPD: Suspects Steal $700K In Goods In More Than 40 Burglaries

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The NYPD says a group of men wanted in over three dozen burglaries have made off with more than $700,000 worth of goods this summer.

Police say the incidents date back to June.

In the first burglary, which occurred on the morning of June 5, four suspects allegedly used a crowbar to pry open the back door of a Verizon store on Ralph Avenue in Brooklyn and broke into a safe, taking off with $40,000 worth of electronics.

They struck the same location again on July 2 using the same method of entry, this time allegedly taking $2,300 worth of phone accessories.

A day earlier, police said they broke into a delivery truck in a parking lot at the corner of East 59th Street and Avenue J, a few blocks from the Verizon store, and took all the furniture that was inside.

The NYPD now believes that the group is responsible for at least 41 other incidents that occurred between July 8 and Aug. 17 in multiple locations throughout the city.

One Brooklyn resident tells WCBS 880's Kristie Keleshian that the burglary spike does not surprise him.

"We live in a difficult time so I was not surprised to see something like that," the man said.

While no details were released about the other incidents, police did release photos and videos of the suspects from inside the Verizon store and inside the parking lot.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Accused NYC serial burglar released again and again and again thanks to new bail law

Accused NYC serial burglar released again and again and again thanks to new bail law

An accused serial burglar was able to steal packages from Brooklyn apartment buildings over and over around Christmas thanks to the state’s new bail law, the Daily News has learned.

Anthony Manson, 50, was arrested for nine burglaries in Prospect Lefferts-Gardens and Crown Heights on Dec. 23, police said. He appeared before a judge on Christmas and was released — only to be busted for six more break ins on Jan. 3, cops said. He was released yet again — and then was nabbed for ripping off a Manhattan sunglasses store on Wednesday.

Even Manson was stunned when he walked out of court for the alleged burglary of the West Village sunglasses store, Center Stage Optique. A police officer said he saw Manson leave the store at 1:50 a.m. through a broken glass door carrying a stash of shades worth $3,995. He had a rock — a burglary tool of choice — in a suitcase, according to a criminal complaint.

“I’m surprised,” Manson said outside Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday after receiving his third order of supervised release. “I never could make bail before. I always had to take the alternative: a program or jail.

“I’m poor. I couldn’t afford to pay no bail. I can’t afford to eat.”

Residents of a building on New York Ave. in Prospect Lefferts-Gardens say Manson — who has become a notorious figure in the neighborhood — is also suspected of snatching their packages.

Surveillance video obtained by The News shows a person who resembles Manson throwing a rock in a bag through a glass door and grabbing an armful of Amazon packages on Dec. 20 and Jan. 7. Footage also captured a similar man trying to hurl a bag through the same window on Tuesday.

“What is happening in our neighborhood is emblematic of what is happening all over the city," said Sasha Tcherevkoff, who lives in the New York Ave. building. "Petty criminals are committing crimes. Law enforcement is arresting them, processing them, and putting them right back on the streets, sometimes within hours.”

“The detectives and officers at the 71st (precinct) have really done an outstanding job in helping our building address this issue, but quite frankly they are as frustrated and fed up as I am," Tcherevkoff, 46, said. "Bail reform is crushing them and making it nearly impossible for them to keep guys like Manson off the streets.”

Manson was arrested for one of those break-ins at the New York Ave. building, but the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute him. The DA declined to explain why, citing an ongoing investigation. A police source would only say Manson is considered a person of interest in those crimes.

Authorities say the state’s new bail contributed to Manson’s burglary spree. The law, which went into effect Jan. 1, but was applied by judges in late 2019, drastically limited bail for people accused of non-violent crimes like burglary.

“With these new laws letting people like this guy go... it’s just becoming a big waste of time,” said one NYPD detective. “Guys like him will keep coming out and we’ll keep arresting him, but we’re not making a difference anymore. You start to feel helpless... When we would grab a guy for property crimes like this guy or a robbery, we would always say, ‘At least we got him off the street.’ That’s not the case anymore."

Both Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Cuomo, who supported bail reform, have signaled that they are open to tweaking the law. Cuomo called it a “work in progress.” De Blasio said he would go to Albany to help “improve that bill.”

“This case has absolutely zero connection to the current bail laws and any suggestion to the contrary represents an orchestrated and cynical attempt to frighten people," said Redmond Haskins, a spokesman for he Legal Aid Society, which is representing Manson. “The Court was right to release our client for this non-violent offense instead of remanding him to a cage at Rikers Island. Pretrial incarceration of people who are presumed innocent based solely on their poverty benefits neither those accused nor public safety.”

A resident of a building that Manson allegedly burglarized also wasn’t ready to throw out bail reform over the unpleasant experience, which has created tension with the landlord.

“It’s a bigger issue than just the new law,” said Andrea, a 41-year-old teacher who asked her last name not be published because of her job.

Police said Manson has a criminal record of 78 arrests dating back to 1993.

“Why had he been let go all these years?” Andrea asked. “Watching the (surveillance) video, you can tell something isn’t right... You could see it on his face. He needs help.”

Under the new bail law, judges do not have discretion to assess a defendant’s likelihood to re-offend, unlike some other states that have overhauled the cash bail system.

“The only options I have are release on your own recognizance and supervised release,” said Manhattan Judge Heidi Cesare, at Manson’s latest arraignment on Thursday. Citing Manson’s lengthy criminal history, six skipped court appearances and litany of pending burglary charges in Brooklyn Cesare said, “I’m not confident you will return to court. Mr. Manson, I hope you prove me wrong.”

An NYPD spokesman said that while the department supports criminal justice reform, judges should be allowed to take criminal history into account when making a bail decision.

“Due to the absence of such a provision, over the past week, there have been several incidents in which offenders were arrested and subsequently released, only to victimize additional members of our communities, within hours of their initial arrest,” said Assistant Chief Thomas Conforti. “As a result, additional New Yorkers in fact became victims. That should not happen.”

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is investigating Manson in connection with six other similar burglaries.

Manson’s appearances in Brooklyn court followed a similar pattern. He received supervised release on Christmas for three burglaries on different days at the same Midwood St. apartment house.

He was arrested again for throwing a brick through a glass door of a Fenimore St. building on Jan. 2 and 3 and taking packages. A prosecutor asked for $15,000 bail because of the previous burglaries, but a judge denied that request on Jan. 4 and Manson walked out on supervised release yet again.

“I’m pissed. I’m very angry,” said Hasan Bishara, who lives in the New York Ave. building that Manson is suspected of burglarizing.

A package of clothes addressed to Bishara was stolen last month. “If he did it the second time, for sure he’ll do it the third time. This guy should stay in jail!” Bishara, 29, said.

Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch shared his anger.

“Cops on the street are past the point of frustration, because we saw this new reality coming from a mile away. You can draw a direct line from Mayor de Blasio’s anti-cop campaign in 2013 to the present disaster," he said.
