SUV hits two people pushing strollers in double hit-and-run in Midtown, witnesses say

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- Two strollers were clipped in a double hit-and-run in a busy intersection near Rockefeller Center Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses say a yellow SUV, possibly a taxi, hit one person pushing a stroller - and then sped away and hit another person, also hitting that stroller.

It happened near West 48th Street and Sixth Avenue just before 3 p.m. Police say the SUV sped up just as the light was changing - but by the time the driver made it through the intersection, the light was red and pedestrians were in it.

The SUV clipped one stroller in the first crosswalk and then hit a second stroller in the second crosswalk, according to witnesses. One victim says their stroller was knocked over, but no one was hurt. Witnesses said they saw the family with the second stroller in the second crosswalk of the intersection.

A hot dog vendor tells Eyewitness News he later helped that second family until an ambulance arrived.

"The yellow taxi, he didn't stop in the red light and he keep going. And on the other side, the people was coming. The baby, his dad and his mom, and the taxi push them in the floor," said Ahmed Sory,."The dad and his mom stopped on the floor and the baby kept going in the car in the middle of the street."

There are many NYPD cameras in the busy intersection, so police will be going through video to find the vehicle.

FDNY EMS says three people were taken to a hospital to be checked out and treated for minor injuries.

Man with bear spray prevents crash-and-grab burglary at Everett pot shop

Man with bear spray prevents crash-and-grab burglary at Everett pot shop

EVERETT, Wash. — Burglary suspects at an Everett pot shop were chased away by a neighbor using bear spray Monday morning.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. at Marijuanaclub99, located on Highway 99 at 12631 Evergreen Way. Owner Ryan Johnson said he got a call that the alarm went off and looked at the security cameras and saw multiple vehicles — one of which crashed into the building.

Johnson said a man who lives nearby ran to the store and sprayed bear repellent at the suspects, who then took off without any items. Significant structural damage was done to the store, though. The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said the vehicles involved are believed to have been stolen.

"It sounds like they ran their cars into each other and almost flipped one of them outside," Johnson added.

Surveillance video shows three vehicles pull into the parking lot and one back into the store. Multiple suspects exit the vehicles and head for the store, then run back after the bear spray-wielding man approaches. Two of the vehicles collided on the way out of the parking lot, and the man is seen on video spraying a few of the suspects in the face.

He's a great guy," Johnson said. "I'm very grateful. He'll get a reward for that. It's amazing he could get out here and put a stop to it so quick.

Monday's incident marked the first crash-and-grab attempt at the dispensary, Johnson said, but the shop has been robbed at gunpoint four or five times. Johnson said he hopes the shop will reopen in the next "day or two." The SCSO said there have been no arrests made.

"Until they change legislation, they're going to keep doing it," Johnson said. "There's no real punishment behind it at this time.

Police: 12 arrested for break-in at Chabad Headquarters in Crown Heights

Police: 12 arrested for break-in at Chabad Headquarters in Crown Heights

Authorities say a dozen people were arrested Monday night following a break-in and vandalism at the Chabad Lubavitch Headquarters synagogue in Crown Heights.
According to a spokesperson for the Chabad, a group of "extremist students" gained unauthorized access to the building at 770 Eastern Pkwy. by breaking through walls of adjacent properties.
The Chabad ordered a cement truck to repair the holes Monday afternoon. When the suspects found out, the Chabad says they attempted to disrupt the repairs by breaking inside the synagogue.
Citizen app video captured the moments people were seen throwing furniture, arguing with officers and emerging from the gaping hole in the wall. Others were seen escaping from grates in the sidewalk.
Members of the Chabad say the action of a few individuals does not define their institution.
The building was closed to members Tuesday morning. They were only allowed to enter for small periods of time. The Department of Buildings is investigating the structural stability of the building.
Charges for the 12 suspects arrested are still pending.
