Abington Township police nab alleged home burglar

Keith Andrew Weisel was charged with burglary and related offenses as well as possession of a controlled substance.

ABINGTON TWP., Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Abington Township police arrested a man they allege was in the middle of a home burglary.

A concerned neighbor called police just after 11 a.m. Wednesday after observing a man allegedly break a window and enter a home on the 1200 block of Highland Avenue.

Police arrived, surrounded the house and realized the suspect was still inside.

"Fortunately, when we took him into custody, the officers discovered that he was in possession of stolen jewelry from the house," said Ed Quinn, deputy chief of the Abington Police Department. "And I'd just like to take a second to point out how useful it is to that person who called 911 and to thank them for making that call, for being vigilant."

Police took Keith Andrew Weisel from Horsham into custody. He is charged with burglary and related offenses as well as possession of a controlled substance.

Action News spoke with Montgomery County residents who were glad to hear of the arrest.

"It makes me feel good that neighbors are watching out for each other," said Sarah Coppol of Oreland. "That's what happens in Oreland all the time. Everybody watches out for everyone and helps each other out that way so it's good to have a community like that."

"At night time now, I keep the outside lights on, and I have three golden retrievers; my one is really protective over the house," said Barbara Dolan of Glenside.

In wake of this incident, officials are warning homeowners that there is an uptick in burglaries around the holidays. They're asking everyone to stay on alert.

"Some of the things you can do to harden yourself as a target to a burglar is first and foremost to make sure your house is well-lit on the exterior," said Chief Quinn. "If you're going out, make sure you're locking your doors, you're locking your windows. If you have an alarm, make sure you're setting it and do things that make it look like somebody's home."

Police are emphasizing: if you see something, say something.

The suspect is being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

Disturbing exclusive video shows serial burglar inside Queens home

Disturbing exclusive video shows serial burglar inside Queens home

QUEENS, New York (WABC) -- A man has been terrorizing homeowners in the Queens Village, Glen Oaks and New Hyde Park area by breaking into their houses in the middle of the day, ransacking the homes and stealing cash, jewelry and luxury items. A second man may also be involved.

The NYPD said five houses have been broken into since July 24. Each case involves a side door or window being broken into.

Typically, the homeowners are not inside the residences at the time. The suspect seems to arrive right after the homeowners leave, although in one case he removed a basement window, stuck his head through, only to be confronted by the homeowner. He fled the scene.

It's believed, in at least one case, the man used a Wi-Fi jammer to attempt to disconnect the home's security cameras.

It happened at the house of Imran Ahmed, of Queens Village.

Ahmed provided Eyewitness News with exclusive surveillance video which showed a man on July 24 around 2:45 p.m. crawling into his house.

He slides across the floor, covering his face and body with a white sheet and he has a backpack in front of his head. He pushes along the floor a large, black device, which is believed to be the Wi-Fi jammer.

"We got an alert around 2:30 that our Wi-Fi went out," Ahmed told Eyewitness News reporter Kristin Thorne. "We didn't think anything of it."

Unknown to the suspect, Ahmed had a camera inside his house which did not need to connect to Wi-Fi in order to record.

It showed the suspect go up the steps to the second floor of the home and then come down about an hour later. He pulls out a walkie talkie and says what sounds like, "Tony, Tony, Tony, Tony."

The suspect starts to walk out of the house by going through the kitchen, but that's when the Wi-Fi reconnects and a loud alarm goes off. A man can be seen scurrying out the side window that he broke into.

Ahmed said the man stole cash and jewelry. Some of them were family heirlooms.

"We're literally two blocks from the precinct," he said. "To have something like this happen is very scary."

Police released surveillance video Thursday of one of the men they believe they're looking for. It was taken from a home that was later robbed of $30,000 worth of jewelry and an $8,000 Louis Vuitton purse. It showed a man in a medical face mask walk up to the front door holding a pallet of water, seeming to pretend to do a water delivery.

Eyewitness News spoke with several homeowners who were victim

A man in Glen Oaks said his parents had left their home when someone broke in around 6:30 a.m. through a back window.

"The closets were flipped inside out," the man said. "All the drawers in the bedrooms were flipped out onto the beds. They went through everything. Seemed like they had a lot of time."

Another homeowner in Glen Oaks said when she left the house with her family on Monday, July 29 around 1 p.m., someone broke into a side door and ransacked their home.

Video shows rock toss shatter Todt Hill glass door during shocking break-in. Men are sought in 3 other incidents.

Video shows rock toss shatter Todt Hill glass door during shocking break-in. Men are sought in 3 other incidents.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The NYPD is asking for the public’s help to find five males sought for questioning in connection with a string of terrifying burglaries where individuals tossed rocks to shatter glass windows and raid upscale Staten Island homes in the middle of the night.

The brazen burglaries and attempted heists were reported in affluent areas of the East and South shores of Staten Island. In some cases, the burglars tried to steal cars, police said, and in one incident in the pattern previously reported in the Advance/SILive.com, culprits drove away in a $400,000 Rolls-Royce sedan.
A shocking video released Wednesday by the NYPD shows five males standing outside a rear, sliding-glass door in a backyard on Todt Hill earlier this week. One of the individuals pitches a large stone into the door, shattering the glass. Four males enter the home through a large hole. The video forwards to show the same four individuals exiting through the hole and running away from the residence.

3 INCIDENTS JUNE 12
The police statement indicates that three incidents occurred in less than an hour on Sunday, June 12. In the first, at about 3:05 a.m. in Tottenville, two unidentified individuals opened a back gate and entered the backyard of a home in the vicinity of Ottavio Promenade and Page Avenue.
The individuals attempted to open the back door of the home, but it was locked, police said. They exited the backyard and fled in a white, four-door sedan.
A few minutes later, around 3:18 a.m., another incident was reported, this time in Prince’s Bay at a home in the vicinity of Hylan Boulevard and Indale Avenue.
Two unidentified individuals attempted to open a rear, sliding door when a female resident saw the would-be intruders and started screaming, police said. The individuals exited the location and fled in a white, four-door sedan. No injuries were reported.
A home in Richmond near Lighthouse Hill, in the vicinity of Saint George Road and Lighthouse Avenue, was targeted at about 3:55 a.m. when two unidentified individuals threw a rock through a first-floor window to enter the home, the police statement said.

Once inside, the individuals removed a set of car keys and drove away in a 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn, according to police.
As previously reported in the Advance/SILive.com, the property owner in Richmond said he and other family members were home during the heist. He tracked down and recovered his own Rolls-Royce in Newark.
The family had been jolted awake by the sound of their home security alarm. Buzzing with adrenaline, the 38-year-old father — who asked to be referred to as John for the purpose of anonymity — went to investigate.
“I was downstairs within seconds while they were pulling out of the driveway,” said John, in an interview conducted through his family’s Ring doorbell. “Obviously [my family] is a little unnerved after everything that’s gone on.”
The morning of the incident, John also noticed a house window was smashed.
“They had to have seen the key because of where it was sitting, and that’s why they broke the window,” he said.

Police asked for the public's help identifying five males in connection with a burglary pattern involving four homes in upscale neighborhoods on Staten Island in June 2022. Rocks were tossed to gain entry to some of the residences. The photo is a screenshot taken from a video of a heist on Monday, June 20, 2022, at about 3:25 a.m. at a home in the vicinity of Benedict Road and Callan Avenue on Todt Hill. (Courtesy of NYPD)

‘That's Not Luck:' Group Steals Whole ATMS, $60K Cash From 42 NYC Businesses in 6 Months

‘That's Not Luck:' Group Steals Whole ATMS, $60K Cash From 42 NYC Businesses in 6 Months

Police are searching for a group of five burglars who have stolen ATMs from at least 42 businesses across Brooklyn and Queens over the last six months -- an apparently sophisticated team that is taking not just cash but entire machines in the heists.

Each of the thefts, which started in December, have occurred in the evening or overnight, while the businesses — ranging from donut shops to laundromats — have been closed.

Video provided by the NYPD from a previous burglary on Fulton Street shows one of the thieves pulling the ATM from the wall, then rolling it to an aisle with a broken window. The man and an accomplice on the outside can be seen on video seemingly trying to figure out how to get the cash machine out of the store.

Video from the East New York Deli on Elton Street from early June showed two burglars using a tool to break the lock on a metal gate, while a third person stands watch. When they are done, they raise the gate and smash open a window to climb inside the shop.

One store clerk believes that the suspects must have scoped out his store beforehand.

"The crazy thing, they definitely been here cause they only broke the particular spot where the ATM was. They didn’t break nowhere else, just that," he said. "Unfortunately they seem to know what they’re doing, because 42? That’s not luck anymore."

Police said they are investigating, but have not yet drawn a connection to ATM thefts previously spotlighted by NBC New York in April. Those crooks also hit businesses in Brooklyn and Queens, wheeling entire machines from stores.

The sheer number of ATMs taken in the latest theft pattern — as well as the $60,000 stolen — has local businesses urging police to catch the group quickly.

No arrests have yet been made. An investigation is ongoing.
