Exclusive video shows workers fighting off thieves during deli robbery

THROGGS NECK, The Bronx (WABC) -- A violent robbery could have ended worse for two bodega workers, before the tables certainly turned.

At around 3:30 a.m. on September 5th, police say five men entered Green Apple Deli on East Tremont Avenue.

The dramatic footage from that night, exclusively obtained by Eyewitness News, shows the moment when one of the suspects snuck behind the counter and put the worker in a sleeper chokehold. That clerk, fearing for his life, tries to fight back while another suspect empties the register.

"The only thing on his mind was to protect - like how to get released from his hand from his neck and defend himself," said the worker to through a translator.

And defend himself he did. Wiggling free, he fights off his assailant.

At that point, the suspect then tries to run away with his accomplices, but they leave one person behind.

That person is then seen being taken down by the clerks, who pin him down until police arrive.

Speaking exclusively to Eyewitness News, the owner of the deli championed the efforts of the employees.

"Of course, we're going to defend ourselves especially if you go behind there," he said.

Police say the suspect who applied the chokehold has been arrested. Another suspect has since turned himself in.

A $3,000 reward is up for any info leading up to the arrest of the suspects who are still out there.

3 suspects wanted after stealing $2 million in jewelry during heist in Brooklyn

3 suspects wanted after stealing $2 million in jewelry during heist in Brooklyn

PARK SLOPE, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Surveillance video captured three armed suspects pulling off a brazen jewelry heist in Brooklyn as they smashed glass display cases and managed to get away with $2 million in jewelry.

Customized one-of-a-kind pieces and a curated collection is what you'll find at Facets, a jewelry store in Park Slope.

All that sparkle drove the wrong kind of attention on Sunday when the owner Irina Sulay buzzed one man in and two more followed.

"He reached in his pocket, and I remember thinking this in my head 'how is he pulling this long thing out, what is this' and it was a hammer he pulls it out and says 'this is how you use a hammer,' and he just started banging," Sulay said.

The smash and grab was caught on the store's many cameras.

Inside the smashed cases were engagement rings. The robbers made off with about 100 of them, worth a value of about $2 million.

"It looks like they knew exactly where to go," Sulay said.

When she moved to use a phone, Sulay got a warning.

"He curses and says, 'don't move, what are you doing I'm going to shoot you, don't move,'" she said.

Abington Township police nab alleged home burglar

Abington Township police nab alleged home burglar

Keith Andrew Weisel was charged with burglary and related offenses as well as possession of a controlled substance.

ABINGTON TWP., Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Abington Township police arrested a man they allege was in the middle of a home burglary.

A concerned neighbor called police just after 11 a.m. Wednesday after observing a man allegedly break a window and enter a home on the 1200 block of Highland Avenue.

Police arrived, surrounded the house and realized the suspect was still inside.

"Fortunately, when we took him into custody, the officers discovered that he was in possession of stolen jewelry from the house," said Ed Quinn, deputy chief of the Abington Police Department. "And I'd just like to take a second to point out how useful it is to that person who called 911 and to thank them for making that call, for being vigilant."

Police took Keith Andrew Weisel from Horsham into custody. He is charged with burglary and related offenses as well as possession of a controlled substance.

Action News spoke with Montgomery County residents who were glad to hear of the arrest.

"It makes me feel good that neighbors are watching out for each other," said Sarah Coppol of Oreland. "That's what happens in Oreland all the time. Everybody watches out for everyone and helps each other out that way so it's good to have a community like that."

"At night time now, I keep the outside lights on, and I have three golden retrievers; my one is really protective over the house," said Barbara Dolan of Glenside.

In wake of this incident, officials are warning homeowners that there is an uptick in burglaries around the holidays. They're asking everyone to stay on alert.

"Some of the things you can do to harden yourself as a target to a burglar is first and foremost to make sure your house is well-lit on the exterior," said Chief Quinn. "If you're going out, make sure you're locking your doors, you're locking your windows. If you have an alarm, make sure you're setting it and do things that make it look like somebody's home."

Police are emphasizing: if you see something, say something.

The suspect is being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
